Capture probability for the anchory larva Engrauris japonicus was estimated from the day-to-night ratio of catches with 23.4cm BONGO net (B-net) and 130cm ring net (R-net) respectively. The two samplers were towed obliquely from a depth of about 45m at 7 stations during the day and night. During the day, the B-net caught more larvae than the R-net over 5mm S. L. At night, the B-net caught almost the same number of larvae as the R-net winthin the range of 4-7mm S. L. and caught more larvae than the R-net over 7mm S. L. The day-to-night catch ratio (CD/CN) of each sampler decreased rapidly with increase of length of larvae. At 10mm S. L., CD/CN of the B-net was about 0.2 and that of the R-net was about 0.05. These results indicate that the capture probability of the B-net is higher than that of the R-net and that larvae over 7mm S. L. can avoid the net at night. At 10mm S. L., capture probaility during the day was estimated to be less than 0.2 with the B-net and less than 0.05 with the R-net.
