To analyse the population of the jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus, a total of 785 individuals, in 25 groups, were collected from 12 localities along the western coast of Kyushu. These specimens were examined for some blood elements and the electrophoretic pattern of plasma proteins. The ecological significance of the results obtained was then discussed from the fisheries point of view.1. The specific gravity of blood, hematocrit value and the amount of plasma proteins were compared between the two groups of blood specimen. The one withdrawn from fish immediately after catch by angling, and the other withdrawn from the fish kept in a concrete tank for 56 days. All the obtained values in the latter group were higher than in the former. While, the electrophoretic patterns of plasma protein of the two groups were quite identical.2. Electrophoretic patterns of plasma protein of the sepcimens kept in floating fish cages at several places in the northern part of Nagasaki Pref. were all the same. On the other hand, four different types were found in the fish collected from Goto-nada and the coast of Kagoshima Pref.3. Although the correlation coefficient between the hematocrit value and the specific gravity of blood was as high as +0.92, the coefficient between the specific gravity of blood and the amount of plasma protein was +0.51, and that between the hematocrit value and the amount of plasma protein was +0.53.
