Cell diameter of Skeletonema and Biddulphia occurring in A tsumi Bay were studied with special reference to their changes over seasonal range. Results of the study are shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Considerations on the relationship between the cell diameter of these diatoms and some of the physical environmental factors, viz. temperature, specific gravity and viscosity of sea-water, have provided a view which, differing from that rendered by preceding authers (cf. Matsue, 1936. Wimpenny, 1936.), shows that planktonic diatoms do not tend to vary their forms and dimensions in accordance with the conditions of sea-water on the basis of adaptation of their floating activity to immedia e surroundings.
