Packed snow resulting from the road traffic was studies for the purpose of improving the method of snow removal. The observation took place on the national highway, Route 17, in the winter of 1969-1970. Four observation points were set on the snow surface along the traverse line of the road. Then the physical properties of the packed snow, such as, density, hardness, free water content, temperature and grain size, were measured at each point. Moreover, at one of these points, hardness and temperature of a middle layer of the packed snow about 5 cm above the surface of pavement were measured. The hardness which was measured during the observation period ranged from 35 to 110 kg/cm2 (Kinoshita's hardness). The differences in the hardness according to the time and the point of observation were less than 50 kg/cm2. The most effective time for removing packed snow was discussed, referring to the above data and to the results of another investigation on the relation between the hardness of packed snow and the depth of cutting by a snow removing machine.
