Thirty-three operation specimens of human hepatocellular carcinoma were studied by transmission electron microscopy. Bile canalicular structure and sinusoid were usually seen in all histological patterns except gland-like structures resembling bile ducts.
Numerous microvilli projecting from lateral surface were observed more frequently in the compact pattern than in the trabecular pattern.
Gland-like structures could be classified into two groups. One group had hepatocytic tumor cells surrounding the lumen and resembled a dilated bile canaliculus. Another group was composed of tumor cells resembling those of bile duct epithelium.
The scirrhous pattern possessed bile canalicular structures like other histological patterns and contained abundant collagen fibers with fibroblasts and myofibroblasts in the space of Disse.
