To clarify the relationship among the time of viral inoculation, infection pattern and liver disease, experimental transmission of duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) into ducklings from the 1st to 14th day posthatch was performed. The ducklings with DHBV inoculation on the 1st and 3rd day posthatch showed persistent viremia whereas those on and after the 5th day posthatch revealed transient viremia. Histologically, hepatitis activity was seen only in the ducklings inoculated with DHBV on and after the 3rd day posthatch. The hepatitis activity was very weak consistent with the diagnosis of persistent hepatitis. The serum level of transaminase activity did not correlate statistically with the histological degree of hepatitis activity. In DHBV infection, the host immune response seemed to play a role on infection pattern and hepatitis activity as seen in human hepatitis B virus infection. However, the weakness of hepatitis activity and the shortness or absence of the incubation period may reflect the differences between these viruses.
