The significance of the activation of the reticuloendothelial system on the resection of the cirrhotic liver.

The prognosis after hepatectomy on cirrhotic patient is poor since hepatic reserve including reticuloendothelial function is so deteriorated. To clarify this point, cirrhotic rats were created by oral administration of thioacetamide for 5 months and activation of reticuloendothelial system was carried out by intraperitoneal administration of OK-432. After 70% hepatectomy, following parameters were studied and compared with those of the non treated cirrhotic rats.<BR>As the results, the elevation of GOT, GPT and LDH was lessened and the deterioration of hepaplastin test after hepatectomy was greatly improved by OK-432 treatment. Furthermore, ATP synthesis, RNA synthesis and DNA synthesis seemed to be improved to a certain extent by the preoperative activation of reticuloendothelial system with OK-432. According to these results, clinical application of OK-432 for cirrhotic patients has been started.
