Detection of antibodies to hepatitis C virus in patients with non-A, non-B liver disease.

Antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV) were determined by solid-phase enzyme immunoassay using recombinant C100-3 antigen and a variety of synthetic peptides corresponding to the polypeptide coded for by HCV genome. In acute non-A, non-B hepatitis, anti-peptide antibodies were detected in five (42%) of 12 patients. Anti-C100-3 antibodies were detected in three patients positive for anti-peptide antibodies. In chronic non-A, non-B liver disease, anti-peptide antibodies were detected in anti-C100-3-negative patients (7/15, 47%) as well as in anti-C100-3-positive patients (19/31, 61%). Thirty-seven chronic hepatitis B virus carriers negative for anti-C100-3 antibodies were also tested for anti-peptide antibodies. Of these, two (5%) were positive for anti-peptide antibodies, and the positive rate was lower than in patients with chronic non-A, non-B liver disease. These results indicate that immune responses can be directed toward various regions of HCV polypeptide and HCV infection may be involved even in patients negative for anti-C100-3 antibodies.
