A 27-year-old nurse who worked in a certain blood center, had acute hepatitis C.<BR>In this case, IFN (HLBI) was used 19 weeks after the onset of the illness, as the hepatitis prolonged with intermittent ALT elevations after acute attack. The IFN treatment, however, was withdrawn 2 weeks after, because of a rapid ALT elevation soon after the administration, which was considered as a side effect of IFN. Thereafter, ALT level lowered soon and never elevated for subsequent 9 months. Serum HCV-RNA retrospectively assayed was positive at a high titer of more than 103 CID/ml for about 4 weeks from the onset up to the period of the highest ALT peak (956 IU/ml).<BR>Then, HCV-RNA remarkably decreased and had disappeared just before IFN administration. The HCV genotype was type II.<BR>The 2nd generation HCV antibody tested by passive hemagglutination assay, appeared with a weak positivity 2 weeks after the onset, and C100-3 antibody tested by EIA appeared 2 months later than 2nd generation antibody. At the time of 9 months after the disappearance of HCV-RNA, both the antibodies were still kept at reratively high titers.
