Fibrinolytic activities of the leukemic cells collected from ten leukemic patients were studied and compared with those of normal leukocytes.Characteristic findings were observed in the spontaneous fibrinolytic activi-ties of these cells. The myeloblasts prepared from four AML patients and small lymphocytes from two CLL patients were lacks of this activity. In contrast, the azurophil granules of leukemic cells of one case of acute promyelocytic leukemia exhibited the elevated spontaneous fibrinolytic activity, which seemed to be approximately two times greater than the activity of normal leukocytes. Moreover, the fibrinolytic enzymes of these leukemic cells showed somewhat similar inhibitory effects on anti-proteases to α-chymotrypsin, but not to plasmin, trypsin and normal leukocytes. Namely, they were completely inhibited by salivary-kallikrein inhibitor (Trasylol) and soybean trypsin inhibitor but very slightly by t-AMCHA. CML neutrophils demonstrated the moderate fibrinolytic activity, which was almost equal to that of normal leukocytes quantitatively and qualitatively, and the enzymes of these cells appeared to be derived from the neutrophil granules. On the other hand, the proactivator activity by SK was equally observed in all examined leukemic cells, and that was thought to be localized mainly in the cell membrane. Like normal leukocytes, any type of leukemic cells did not possess other fibrinolytic enzymes such as the plasminogen-activator, the plas-minogen activated by UK and the anti-UK.The author wishes to express appreciation to Prof. Dr. J. Gomi (Medicine), Associate Prof. Dr. M. Hasegawa (Medicine) and Dr. H. Sugita (Medicine) for their interest and advice.
