The uni-directional spreading rate of oil slicks on the calm water surface was experimentally studied. The use of oils of low spreading coefficient suggests that the behavior of oil slicks in the wide range can be examined by the apparatus of relatively small scale. As it is difficult to reduce the spreading coefficient with holding of oils at sufficiently high viscosity, the effect of the viscous force in oil slicks on the spreading rates must be predicted prior to use of oils of low spreading coefficient.<BR>In the surface tension regime of spreading, the dependence of spreading rates on viscosity of oils was observed for the case that the oils were less viscous than five times of water viscosity. In the regime in which the gravity and the surface tension are simultaneously the dominant force in spreading, the same effect of oil viscosity was observed. The spreading rates in both regime are correlated by empirical equations which contain a correction factor for the viscous force in oil slick.
