Control effects of a synthetic pyrethroid, bifenthrin, were studied on the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus SHIRAKI in the laboratory and field.
Actions of bifenthrin on the worker termites appeared rapidly within one day at 2.5 ppm and slowly by the seventh day at 0.25 ppm in filter-paper contact test. Similar action was found in soil treatment and LC-50 value was 0.28 ppm in soil on the seventh day. Residual effect of bifenthrin in soil treatment was superior to that of chlordane at one ppm in mountain soil for two years, and was nearly equal in volcanic ash soil for one year. Translocation in soil and leaching of bifenthrin were smaller than those of chlorpyrifos. In soil boring test, bifenthrin showed inhibitory effect with somewhat repellent action on the termite, which was superior to chlorpyrifos, at 0.032 and 0.008% solution application followed by weathering and non-weathering treatment, respectively. Efficacy level in wood-block test treated with 0.05-0.1% oil formulation attained to the qualitative standards in spite of weathering. Soil treatment by the improved ground-board method and wood-stake treatment exhibited no termite attack for more than two years at 0.025-0.1% bifenthrin application in the field at Fukiagehama in Kagoshima prefecture.
Results described above indicate that bifenthrin is expected as an excellent termite-proofing chemical at low concentration for wood preservation.
