The pressure drop of a packed column is one of the f undamental performace of the rectifing distillation column, but miscellaneous informations of the pressure drop of these columns are almost limited to the data investigated under atmospheric or relatively low vacuum, say 760100 torr, <BR>Due to the demand to develope the new technique in order to operate the fractionating distillation under higher vacuum, we had to observe the pressure drops of McMahon packing and Rashig ring of which, characteristics are tabulated in Table 1. under the extremely reduced pressure down to 0.1 torr, by means, of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 2.<BR>Two polystyrol columns of diameter of 35mm and 80 mm, 1 meter high are packed as effective height. of 800 mm, and evacuated by mechanical vacuum pump. The absolute pressure and pressure drop weremeasured by three manometers and differential manometers. The pressure and flow rate were adjusted. by means of two variable leaks, flow rate being measured by dry test meter and burette type f ow-meter.<BR>Although the data were illustrated conventionally as in Fig. 4, which presents tt e relationship of G/g vs. P, and the data lines were unfavorably seperated according coumn pressure.<BR>The another method of presenting these phnomana of pressure drop, which are expressed by equations 5 and 8, seems more adequate. The single relationship of Re and f independent of pressure was obtained, and was more convenient to extend the estimation of pressure drop due to these packings.<BR>Linear and curved sections of the Fig. 8 represent the viscous and turbulent flow region, respectively, The air flow through packed beds seems to be turbulent one when the modified Reynolds number Re exceeds 10.
