Based on matrix simulation regarding the material balance of ball mill process for cement-clinker grinding, the optimum policy of design to minimize total cost including depreciation of equipment was examined.<BR>Fundamental decision variables of the process were the size of the classifier and the flow-rate to the classifier.<BR>In general, the capacity ratio of mill to classifier and the circulating load should be increased with the increase of required specific surface area of fine products or with the decrease of grindability of materials.<BR>In a closed-circuit ball mill for cement-clinker grinding, equipped with a Sturtevant-type air classifier, and in the case of required specific surface of fine products=3, 200 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/g by means of Blaine method, the optimum power consumption ratio of classifier to mill was estimated at 0.12 and optimum circulating load at about 4.
