The equivalent diameter of a bubble rising in liquid has been measured as a function of the floating bubble diameter at gas/liquid interface. Measurements were carried out over the floating bubble size range 0.26 to 2.18 cm and for various liquids (tap water, 8.98 kmol/m3 glycerin aq. solution, and 0.016 and 0.328 mol/m3 sodium oleate aq. solutions).<BR>Bubble equivalent diameter and floating bubble diameter were measured by the sonic pulse response method and the vertical photographic method, respectively.<BR>As a result, the following empirical equation is proposed : <BR><I>D</I>0=0.679<I>D</I><I>f</I>+0.120<BR>where <I>D</I><I>f</I> means maximum floating bubble diameter and <I>D</I>0 is equivalent diameter of bubble rising in liquid.<BR>In addition, the following observations are made. 1) This equation has a bias within 5.5 %. 2) It can be considered that there is no effect of surface tension or viscosity of liquids on maximum floating bubble diameter. 3) Floating bubble configuration becomes steady in a short time, while the life time of a floating bubble is appreciably long, and so <I>D</I><I>f</I> is easily measured.
