Tests are described on the adhesive strength of gold films deposited on glass substrate under tensile loads. Through a flat-topped rivet fixed by an adhesive onto the film the force to pull the film was transmitted normally to the substrate surface. This force was measured by a spring balance at two increasing rates of stress. Although the results exhibit considerable scatter, they indicate that their distribution can be well expressed by Weibull's distribution function and the average adhesive strength was on an order of 10-1 kg wt/ mm2. The experimental results were discussed from the view point of statistical fracture theory.
