Reflexes of cervical muscles during linear acceleration were recorded electromyographically in normal subjects stepping laterally or antero-posteriorly. Electromyographical activity was observed in muscles opposite to the direction of stepping : the contralateral splenius capitis muscle in lateral stepping, bilateral semispi-nalis capitis muscles in forward stepping and bilateral sternocleidomastoid muscles in backward stepping.<BR>Contraction of the contralateral muscles during linear acceleration seems to be elicited by the vestibulo-spinal reflex, especially from the otolith organ, to keep head position.
