Availability of mice, male ddY strain, in the nutritional evaluation of protein as experimental animals was investigated under their separated feeding, one mouse per cage, or their grouped feeding, six mice per cage, conditions. The effects of protein contents and those of supplemented protein and amino acids in the diet on the growth of mice were observed markedly as in the case of rats. These effects were more appreciable in mice under the separated feeding condition, in which the amount of food consumed per mouse could be estimated, than in mice under the grouped feeding condition. The amount of food consumed per body weight in mice was approximately twice as much as that per body weight in rats, whereas the optimal dietary protein level in mice was nearly one-half of that in rats. These experimental results demonstrate that mice, under the separated feeding condition, as well as rats are useful in the protein nutritional study as experimental animals.
