It was demonstrated experimentally in rabbits that the duration of caloric nystagmus did not always represent the activity of the peripheral labyrinthine function. The duration of nystagmus due to labyrinthine disorders of one side ear (Meniere′s disease) reveals frequently a directional preponderance by caloric test. Directional preponderance which consist of prolonged duration of nystagmus to one direction by caloric stimulation of either ear does not indicate a hyperactivity of one labyrinth. The rabbit which has an unbalance in peripheral labyrinth function shows the spontaneous nystagmus, but it disappeares gradually by the central compensation. In these rabbits it is found that the spontaneous nystagmus is induced by an unbalance in central pathway of the labyrinth after caloric stimulation, thereby the duration of nystagmus is prolonged. When the cerebellum was injured, the duration of nystagmus was prolonged by caloric stimulation of peripheral labyrinth, but directional preponderance was not reverled distinctly, when theperipheral labyrinth was kept in the balance.
