Sixteen cases of Plummer-Vinson syndrome associated with cervical esophageal web were reported. All patients were middle-aged female and had hypochromic microcytic anemia with iron deficiency. The esophagogram showed existence of web on the anterior wall of the cervical esophagus in all cases. However membranous structure, which is corresponding to esophageal web observed in esophagogram, was not found through endoscopic investigation. Epithelial hyperplasia (acanthosis, dyskeratosis, hyperkeratosis) was revealed by the histological examination of the esophageal mucosa. Therefore, the authors concluded that esophageal web in Plummer-Vinson syndrome might be caused in restriction of dilation of the esophageal wall resulted from serum iron deficiency. The definition, incidence, diagnostic methods and pathogenesis of esophageal web were also discussed through a survey of the literatures.
