An oscillating sphere magnetic rheometer was newly developed. Principles and methods were described for evaluating dynamic visco-elasticity of mucus in this instrument. Storage where η0 is the dynamic viscosity of Newtonian liquid of known viscosity, ω is the angular frequency, X0 and X1 is the maximum displacement of the sphere in the Newtonian liquid and in the mucous sample respectively, δ is the phase lag of the displacement of the sphere behind themagnetic force. G' and G" of mucopurulent nasal mucus from the patients with chronic sinusitis were determined using the rheometer. Both G' and G" showed a tendency to increase with increasing angular frequency. The instrument provided data on visco-elasticity of small mucous sample volumes (about 0.1ml each) over wide range of angular frequency (1-200rad/sec).
