The humidification in nasal cavity was inves- tigated in various conditions with a quickly reac- ting electric hygrometer. The inspiratory air in the pharynx was sampled through the electrically hea- tened vinyl tube only at inspiratory phase. The humidity in healthy persons (N-group) was 31.8± 1.0mmHg, 30.5±0.6mmHg in sinusitis before opera- tion (E), 29.1 ±0.6mmHg in sinusitis after operation (OE), 23.8±1.0mmHg in atrophic rhinitis before operation (A), 28.0+1.6mmHg in atrophic rhinitis after operation (OA).In addition to bilateral natural respiration, we examined the state of unilateral respiration, adre- nalin-insufflated and atropin-injected states. The following conclusions were obtained :1) N-group shows the highest figure, A-group the lowest. E-, OE-, and OA-groups between them, and differences between these all groups are statistically significant.2) Differences between natural and adrenalin. insufflated states are significant in N-, E-, and A- groups.3) Differences between bilateral and unilateral nasal respiration are significant only in N-group.4) Differences between natural and atropin-injec- ted states are not significant.5) The humidifying capacity in atrophic rhinitis is increased largely by Kubos operation. That humidification in nasal cavity was influen- ced by the form of the nasal cavity and that it was also closely connected with the reserve humi- difying capacity and the compensation by expiratory air was discussed.
