Clinicopathological Study of Perineural Invasions of the Colorectal Carcinomas.

Perineural invasions (pni) of the colorectal carcinoma were examined in 62 foci of 61 patients from the primarily resected specimens and in 6 foci of locally recurred lesions from the reresected and autopsied specimens. In this study, relationships between pni and the depth of invasion, localization of the carcinoma, the degree of lymphcanal and venous invasion, metatasis to the regional lymph nodes, DNA ploidy pattern of tumor cell nuclei and survival rate were investigated. Pni was noted in 13 lesions (20.9%), in all of which, the tumors had invaded beyond the serosa or the adventitia. It was also noted that pni was not related with other factors than the depth of invasion.<BR>In 6 patients with local recurrences pni was noted in 4 primary lesions (66.7%) and 4 recurred lesions (66.7%) which significantly higher than that of 16.1% seen in primary lesion of the nonrecurred patients (p<0.05). According to these results, we estimated that the pni was an independent factor in assessing the grade of malignancy and local recurrence.
