In order to investigate the aetiological relation of large bowel cancer and feces, fecal bacterial flora and bile acids were examined in patients with colorectal cancer or adenoma, together with healthy individuals (control), who were having a today's average Japanese life style.
The fecal aerobic flora isolated from the control group contained significantly higher numbers of Candida and Enterobactor than other group. However, there was no difference in the number of Streptococcus displaying strong j3-glucosidase activity among these three groups. The anaerobic isolates from the control group contained a significantly lower number of Fusobacterium than that of the colorectal cancer group. However, there were no differences in the total number of bacteria and the anaerobic to aerobic ratio among these three groups, the results consistent with the study o Hill et al in Europeans and Americans.
This study did not show any positive correlation between cancer and the bacterial species known to have such a relationship.
Both primary and secondary bile acid levels in the feces o the colorectal cancer group tended to be elevated. Of particular note is that both primary and secondary bile acids in the feces of the adenoma group, a high-risk group for colorectal cancer, were at the median values of the colorectal cancer and control group.
