In order to clarify the role that the vagus plays in colic movement, strain gauge force transducers were used to measure colic movement in conscious dogs both before and after truncal vagotomy (TV). Further, to investigate the change in colic movement after TV, intramural AchE activity was histochemically determined.
TV caused shortening of the colic contractile waves in all parts of the colon, but the amplitude of the contractile waves in the proximal colon was much lower than in the distal colon. A great difference in movement between the proximal colon and distal colon was therefore concluded to be present. The shortening of the waves and the lowering of the amplitude were most distinct up to 2 weeks after TV, after which the contractile waves gradually recovered. However, there was no difference in the frequency of contractile waves measured before and after TV. AchE activity gradually decreased and, 3 months after TV, was seen to be significantly less.
These results indicate that TV greatly influences colic movement. They further demonstrate that the influence of TV is largely independent of movement factor and colic regions. Finally, it may be concluded that the recovery after TV is induced by the increase in intramural Ach due to the lowering of AchE activity.
