Carcinoma of the sigmoid colon complicating ulcerative colitis: Report of a case.

A case of carcinoma of the sigmoid colon in a 42-year-old woman with ulcerative co-litis is presented. She was admitted into our hospital complaining of abdominal pain, diarrhea and bloody stool. She had had a 13-year-history of ulcerative colitis. A barium enema in this patient showed a marked stricture of the sigmoid colon. In a colonoscopic examination we could not find any active inflammation. The colonoscope could not be passed through the stricture. The biopsies taken from this lesion showed no evidence of carcinoma. Seven days after her admission, an emergency operation was performed on this patient because of the deterioration of her abdominal symptoms. Operative diagnosis was advanced sigmoid carcinoma with the metastatic paraaortic lymphnodes. The procedure was left hemicolectomy. The histological examination revealed adenocarcinoma (mainly signet ring cell type) and mild dysplasia around the cancerous tissue.<BR>According to a review of the literature, there have been a few reported cases of carcinoma complicating long standing colitis in Japan.
