Effect of ruminal protozoa in calves was examined with two trials. In Trial 1, six ruminal cannulated Holstein calves were used. The plasma gastrin level of calves during pre-inoculated period was high, and showed little change following feeding. Inoculation of ruminal protozoa decreased the plasma gastrin level, especially 8 (P〈0.01) and 10 (P〈0.05) hour after feeding. Distinct gastrin peak at 1 hour after feeding was observed only in post-inoculated period. In Trial 2, seven newborn Holstein calves were used. At 5 weeks of age, 4 calves were inoculated ruminal protozoa, and the rest 3 calves were kept unfaunated until 24 weeks of age. The average plasma gastrin level of faunated calves was lower than of unfaunated ones. The two trials indicated that ruminal protozoa affect calf plasma gastrin level and secretion pattern.
