Four wethers fitted with a catheter in the common bile duct and three cannulas located in the abomasum, the duodenum, and the terminal ileum were fed alfalfa hay cubes, and then infused starch (150g/d) or starch (150g/d) plus casein (50g/d) into the abomasum for 20 days under a change over design. Compared with the pre-infusion period, abomasal starch infusion decreased pancreatic α-amylase activity, but not lipase and protease activity. Compared with starch infusion, starch plus casein infusion increased the activities of pancreatic α-amylase and lipase, but did not affect the pancreatic protease activity. Compared with starch infusion, infusion of starch plus casein decreased the glucan proportion in the α-glucoside of deal digesta, and increased the dextrin proportion. These results suggest that the proportional activity of digestive enzyme secreted from the pancreas of sheep varies regardless of a proportion of the substrate in digesta.
