In the first experiment, the effect of mucosal high Mg concentration on Ca absorption in everted sacs of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum of goats and sheep was examined. An increase in mucosal MgCl2 concentration from 1.2 to 60.0mmol/l significantly increased Ca absorption (P<0.05) in the duodenum and ileum of goats and in the jejunum and ileum of sheep. In the second experiment, it was observed that Mg-induced Ca absorption was linearly dependent on mucosal Mg concentrations (r=0.744, P<0.001), and it was the mucosal and not the serosal solution that significantly increased Ca absorption (P<0.05) in the ovine ileum. In addition, potential difference (PD) between mucosal and serosal sides did not correlate with Mg-induced Ca absorption. In the third experiment, it was found that mucosal 60.0mmol/l MgCl2 significantly increased Jms (unidirectional flux rate from mucosal to serosal)of45 Ca2+ (P<0.05) in the caprine ileum. From these findings, it is concluded that the ileum of goats and sheep is a preferable site to observe the Mg-induced Ca absorption in vitro, and that Mg exerts its action on a mucosal and not a serosal side of the epithelial tissue without depending on PD.
