1) The concentrations of nitrate in various grasses and legumes under the same fertilizer treatment were determined at different cutting dates to discuss their species differences. 2) The samples were taken five times on April 15, May 1, May 15, June 1, June 15 in 1964 and, in addition, at the heading stage for grasses and at the flowering stage for legumes in 1964. 3) The concentrations of nitrate in grasses were 0.081-0.811 per cent as potassium nitrate and those in legumes, 0.263-2.206 per cent. They seemed to be prominent in the early cutting materials. After May 15, the concentrations of nitrate in grasses were on the rapid decrease. However in legumes, it was after June 1 that the concentrations of nitrate began to decrease. 4) The concentrations of nitrate were different among species. Among eight grasses cut before May 1, meadow fescue seemed to be the most nitrate accumulating species. Next to it came orchard grass, timothy and smooth bromegrass. Among eight legumes, alfalfa seemed to be the most nitrate accumulating species. Next to it came Ladino clover and sweet clover. 5) The concentrations of nitrate in grasses at the heading stage were at an average of 0.402 per cent, ranging from 0.179 to 0.774 per cent. Those in legumes at the flowering stage were at an average of 0.882 per cent, ranging from 0.633 to 1.679 per cent.
