Infusoria which exist in the rumen of sheep and goats were cultivated in vitro and examined for nitrogen metabolism so that their sharing action concerning the transformation of nitrogen compounds in the rumen might be clarified. Culture media were prepared by extracting hay with saline solution and by cultivating rumen bacteria. The rumen liquor was also used after excluding feed debris and other large particles by gentle centrifugation. It was ascertained that Infusoria which belong to the species Entodenium always produce ammonia. nitrogen. In sterilized culture media which had been sub ected to super-centrifugation, filtrated through the Berkefeld or Seitz filter to remove as many rumen bacteria as possible, and passed through carbon dioxide gas, it was recognized that washed Infusoria produced also ammonia nitrogen. After cultivation of Infusoria in the rumen liquor at 39°C, each fraction of nitrogen compounds in the media was examined. It was recognized that the protein, supposed to be derived mainly from the rumen bacteria, decreased gradually and that ammonia nitrogen increased in the course of time. Accordingly, it was concluded that Infusoria ingested the rumen bacteria as a source of protein and produced ammonia nitrogen as one of the end products of nitrogen metabolism.
