Sera of 11 strains of mice were examined by starch-gel electrophoresis and histochemical methods for differences among strains in zymogram patterns of serum esterases. The inbred strains of mice used in this investigation were obtained from National Institute of Animal Health.The results were summarized as follows:1) Eleven to thirteen esterase patterns in mice were separated by starch-gel electrophoresis and in these esterase zones Es-2, Es-3, Es-5, Es-6, Es-7, Es-8, Es-9, Es-12 and Es-13 zone were present in sera of all inbred strains of mice.2) Es-4 zone combining with serum albumin was present in sera of all inbred strains, but not in C57BL/6 serum and this strain showed specific zymogram patterns.3) Some of esterase zone in the sera of mice had considerably different activities among strains. The activity-levels of serum cholinesterase isozyme, Es-9 zone, in female mice were always higher than those in male mice and exhibited considerable individual variation. The activity-levels of the Es-9 zone in female mice were divided into three groups, corresponding to high (CFW, CF#1, SS, RR), intermediate (DDK, C57BL/6, NC, AA) and low activities (KK, C3H/He, DSD), respectively. Those in male mice were divided into tow groups, corresponding to high (CFW, CF#1, KK, DDK, C57BL/6) and low activities (SS, RR, NC, AA, C3H/He, DSD), respectively. Moreover the Es-13 zone which forms main band of serum cholinesterase isozymes in the mouse also showed different activities among strains.4) Es-10 zone, a type of aliesterase, exhibited considerably different activities among individuals and strains in mice. The activity-levls of the Es-10 zone were divided into three groups, corresponding to high (CFW, CF#1, C3H/He, DDK), low (DSD, NC, RR, C57BL/6) and negative activities (SS, AA, KK), respectively. Moreover, the activity-levels of the Es-10 zone in male mice were slightly higher than those in female mice.5) C3H/He and KK sera didn't show Es-1 zone, the fastest mobility of the zones observed, whereas sera from the other strains studied revealed. Es-1 zone of CF#1 exhibited the highest activities of all inbred strains studied. Moreover, the activity-levels of this zone in male mice were slightly higher than those in female mice as well as Es-10 zone.6) Zymogram patterns of serum esterases didn't exhibit characteristic differences among strains of the different origin, namely inbred strains from foreign origin and those bred in Japan. However, Es-10 zone was present in sera of all foreign strains, but not in KK, AA and SS strains of Japanese strains, and inbred strains bred in Japan were more markedly variant than those in foreign strains.
