The milk yield, oxygen consumption (-Qo2), nucleic acids (DNA-P and RNA-P), and dry matter contents of the mammary gland were examined in guinea pigs at the late period of pregnancy and the lactation period. The mammary gland weight, -Qo2/DNA-P, RNA-P/DNA-P, total -Qo2, total RNA-P, and total dry weight were all low at the late period of pregnancy, increased abruptly on lactation day 0, reached nearly maximum on days 6 and 12, and then decreased gradually. The rates of RNA-P/WW and RNA-P/DW showed similar but not so remarkable changes. On the other hand, -Qo2 on both bases was the highest on day 0 and then decreased. The changes of dry weight percentage, DNA-P/WW, and DNA-P/DW were rather contrary to those mentioned above. In total DNA-P, which was very low at the late period of pregnancy, no significant changes were found during the lactation period. High correlations were obtained between milk yield and mammary gland weight, total -Qo2, total RNA-P, total DNA-P, etc.The significance of these findings was also discussed.
