In chickens administered with S-35 labeled sulfate, the incorporation and distribution of inorganic sulfur in the body was studied. The signfficance of the chief intestinal flora in the experimental animals was considered.1. A portion of the S-35 labeled sulfate given to chickens was incorporated into the cystin group of the intestinal mucosa, ovary, spleen, heart, liver, and brain. These organs are composed of tissues high in growth potentiality and in oxygen requirement. A small amount of the labeled sulfur was detected from the methionine isolated from the spleen and liver.2. It has been considered that most of the bacteria which synthesize sulfur amino acids belong to the facultative anaerobic Enterococcus and Coli groups and that some of them belong to the facultative anaerobic Lactobacillus group and aerobic B. megaterium.3. Sulfur- amino-acid bacteria are significant as a source of supply of sulfur to the oxidative respiratory system in the living body. Enterococcus synbiosing with Lactobacillus is important in the intestinal flora.
