It is suspected that insufficiently salted skins should deteriorate during storage or transportation. The authors carried out the experiments to make clear the change in properties of insufficiently salted skin during storage and its influence on properties of resultant chrome upper leather.Domestic calf skins (7 lbs, 6 hours after flaying) were salted and cured with fine salt for 7 days, 20 days or 30 days and followed by the storage of 2 months at 28-30°C. Seven days salted skins were re-salted with fine salt after three kinds of pretreatment: Method I; without pretreatment, Method II; scattering saturated sodium chloride solution over the skin, Method III; steeping skin in saturated sodium chloride solution including 10ppm chlortetracycline. Re-salted skins were stored for 2 months at 28-30°C. Each group of skins (salted or re-salted and with or without storage after salt treatment) was examined on the properties of skin such as the content of sodium chloride, moisture, non-protein nitrogen and soluble protein nitrogen and appearance of skins. And after making these skins into chrome leathers, their properties such as chemical, mechanical and the appearance were tested.The results obtained were as follows. Seven days of salting period was confirmed to be insufficient in respect to the content of salt and moisture in skin. So, insufficiently salted skins were deteriorated during storage with large increase of non-protein nitrogen content and with degradation of the mechanical properties and qualities by appearance of resultant chrome leather. Re-salting of insufficiently salted skin was found to be the most effective in Method III, while Method I was of little effect in respect of the properties of skin after storage and of resultant leather.
