To examine some properties of soil moisture of the tea garden in laboratory and field, the moisture equivalent, maximum water holding capacity, wilting ccefficient and hygroscopic coefficient were determined.
The moisture of the brown soil of Makinchara diluvial upland was seemed to have peculiar and defective property. But, we could not decide that this defective property of soil moisture should be the cause of inferiority of the tea garden. The main features of the soil moisture were as follows;
1. The soil in the field condition always retained larger moisture equivalent than in the air-oried ?? rdition. This relation was conspicuous especially in the soil which was extremely rich in humus.
2. The moisture equivalent and maximum water holding capacity of the field where sweet potato and barley were grown every year, were larger than those of the tea garden.
3. The relation between the moisture equivalent and redoxpotential was nearly linear in both mineral soil and humus one.
4. The Makinohara brown soil had much effective moisture and the volcanic ash soil was abundant in both unfree water and excessive free water. The results of the observation in the field were not clear.
