In a dog standing on a laterally-slant board, the greater portion of the body weight falls on the limbs of one lateral side and the remaining smaller portion on the other side. If the inclination has increased up to 15 degrees, the line of gravity shifts extremely towards the boundary of the base of surport and the dog can scarcely continue to stand on the board. Although such an event will not occure in dog's daily life, this problem has been selected to give a brief picture concerning comparison of muscular activity between weight-support and non-support side of the body.In a lateral side view, any change of stance from normal standing posture on level ground can not be found(Fig. 1 & 2). Remarkable change of stance will not be recognized until the dog is observed from the front or the rear. The muscles examined and their magnitude of activity on the respective support and non-support side of the body are summarized in Tab. 1. In this table, fifty different muscles are listed with their designated magnitude, like relaxed-, weak+, strong++, and very strong+++, in each case of different inclinations increased from 5 to 15 degrees at a interval of 5 degrees. The muscles around the head and neck contribute to stability necessary to balance the body in any form of stances on the board. An increase of inclination of the board causes to reinforce the contractive action in the stabilizers of shoulder girdle, the antagonists of shoulder joint and the flexors of digital joints in the fore limb, and also the stabilizers of knee joint, the extensors of spring joint and the flexors of digital joints in the hind limb. Vigorous activities have especially been produced in the flexor muscles of digits in both fore and hind limb.On the non-support side, all the muscles of limb weaken their activities. Some of the anti-gravity mscules playing major role in normal standing i. e. M. deltoideus, M. triceps brachii and M. quadriceps femoris etc. cease or remarkably decrease their activity. The schemes in Fig. 4 set distribution of the functioning muscles on the support side. In this figure, the width of stripes shows their intensity of contraction and the numbers of the stripes shows the muscles coinside with those of the Tab. 1.
