Urinary Gonadotropins from Goat:V. Gonadotropin Excretion during Non-Breeding Season and Lactation

The gonadotropin excretion has been studied in the urine of female goat during nonbreeding season and lactation.Twenty four-hour specimens were collected from three adult Saanen goats during nonbreeding season and from two goats during their lactation periods. Gonodotropic preparationswere obtained from the urines by the procedure consisting of kaolin extraction and batchwiseadsorption on tricalcium phosphate as reported previously. The final products were designated as UG. Biological and chemical assays were done by the method described in our previous reports. In the biological assay based on uterine weight of intact immature mouse, diethylstilbestrol (DES) was used as standard and urinary gonadrogic activity was expressed as, μg DES equivalent per day. Two by two (2×2) or two by one (2×1) design was employed in the biological assays for the estimation of gonadotropic activities of UG.The results obtained in the present experiments were as follows1. A consistent pattern of the urinary gonadotropin excretion during non-breeding season was observed in all three goats studied. The excretion was maintained in relatively constant level during non-breeding season, being approximately 0.018-0.022μg. DES equiv. /24hr. in all three goats.2. The urinary gonadotropin was maintained constantly in a low level throughout the lactatian period, being approximately 0.014-0.016μg. DES equiv. /24hr. in two goats studied. The pattern of the gonadotropin excretion thoughout lactation period was similar to that of non-breeding season, but the level of the excretion of lactating goat was slightly lower than that of the goat in non-breeding season.3. Comparing the present results with those of our previous report, the levels of the urinary gonadotropin excretion during non-breeding season and lactation period were lower than that during estrous cycle.4. In UG derived from goats in estrous cycle, non-breeding season and lactation period, a good correlation existed between the sugar content measured by the chemical assay and the gonadotropic activity assayed by the mouse uterus test.
