1. Electrophoretically homogeneous casein was divided into two fractions by paper-electrophoresis carried out in the presence of a definite concentration of calcium chloride. These fractions were a calcium-soluble and a calcium-insoluble fraction, the former moving more easily than the latter.2. From investigation of the two fractions by means of electrophoresis on a mixture of crude κ-casein and α-casein and rennin coagulation of the separated fractions on paper, it was presumed that the calcium-soluble and the calcium-insoluble fractions corresponded to κ-casein and αR-casein, respectively.3. Calcium-binding capacity was determined in both fraction by moving boundary electrophoresis in the Presence of calcium chloride and paper-electrophoresis using a buffer solution containing Ca45Cl2. It was found that the difference in calcium-binding capacity between both casein fractions was not the principal cause of this electrophoretic fractionation.
