To analyze various conditions which have in fluence upon the development of chicks, artificially hatched, observation was made on how oxygen concentration of the atmosphere in the early stage of brooding affected the inclusion of yolk-sac into the embryonic body and the later development of chicks. The following facts were clarified:1) For a chick embryo with its yolk-sac still hanging outside its body walls, oxygen-bathing was very effective. A high oxygen concentration however, decreased its effect.2) By oxygen-bathing, the death-rate of embryos at the time of "artificial hatching" decreased especially to zero level when 61% oxygen was used, but increased when a higher oxygen concentration was applied.3) The average. weight of the chick was the lightest when 21% oxygen (air) was used for bathing and the heaviest when 41% oxygen was used. It gradually decreased in a higher oxygen concentration applied.4) Chicks exposed to (air) during operation showed a tendency to suffer from diarrhea and the death-rate ryas. high, among. them. On, the contrary, those receiving operation; in oxygenated air showed no diarrhea at all.
