Studies on the Change of Composition and the Tanning Properties of Skin Tissue:VII Inflnence of Salts in the Pretreatment

Skin tissue specimens which received some or no alkali pretreatment were treated with nine different salts in the same ionic strength and changes of the properties of the skin were examined. The following results were obtained.1. In the case of the skin which had received alkali pretreatment, the extracted amount of soluble protein was different according to salt used. When the action of salt was given, adsorption of tannic acid was increased, except KCl and NaNO3 which had the opposite effect, and the ability to combine with water was decreased, except MgCl2, KSCN, and KCl which had the opposite effect. In MgCl2, KS CN, NaCl, CaCl2, and CH3COONa, the order of in crease of adsorption of tannic acid coincided with the order of increase of ability to combine with water. These results were discussed from the point of view of the ability to extract soluble protein and to decompose collagen in these salts or the sort of component ion.2. In the case of the skin receiving alkali pretreatment, adsorption of tannic acid was increased except KCl and NaCO3 which had the opposite effect and the ability to combine with water was increased without exception when the action of salt was given.In CH3COONa, Na2SO4, NaCl, NaNO3, and KCl which had no ability to decompose collagen, the order of increase of adsorption of tannic acid coincided with the order of increase of ability to com bine with water.In KSCN, CaCl2, NH4Cl, and MgCl2 which had the ability to decompose collagen, the order of in crease of adsorption of tannic acid coincided with the order of decrease of ability to combine with water, and also the order of the former coincided with the order of increase of ability to decompose collagen and digestibility of collgen by trypsin and the order of decrease of amido-nitrogen.
