The influence of . heating of the skin tissue on its properties and extracted matter from it was studied experimentally on specimens subjected to some or no alkali pretreatment. The following results were obtained.1. When the skin tissue which had received no alkali pretreatment was heated, glucuronic acid and derivatives of ketose or their complex compounds were brought into solution, but collagen was not.2. When the skin tissue which under went alkali pretreatment was heated at slightly above 35°, collagen was brought into solution but carbohydrate was not at all.3. Regardless of alkali pretreatment, adsorption of tannic acid by the heated skin was increased according to the rise of temperature, but the ability to combine with water was decreased in the case of the skin which had received no alkali pretreatment and increased in the case of the skin receiving the pretreatment, though amounts of amido-nitrogen and digestibility of collagen by trypsin did not remarkably change.4. It is assumed that the changes recognized in the skin receiving no alkali pretreatment were due to the change of the chemical composition of skin tissue, and that those recognized in the skin receiving the pretreatment were due to a small change of collagen structure.
