The effects of added crude egg-phospholipids and egg-lecithin on rospiratory activity and motility of ejaculated boar and bull spermatozoa were studied with the following results.
1. Crude phospholipids of egg yolk were effective in maintaining the motility and oxygen consumption of boar and bull spermatozoa in a sugarfree medium under aerobic conditions.
2. The oxygen consumption of boar spermatozoa in a medium containing glucose was not increased by the addition of crude phospholipids and purified lecithin,
3. Purified lecithin from crude phospholipids of boar and bull spermatozoa had no effect on motility and oxygen consumption under aerobic conditions,
4. Autoxidized lecithin from egg yolk inhibited the boar sperm motility completely, but it did not affect the respiratory activity.
5. Phospholipids preparations from the non-dialysable fraction of egg yolk had no effect on the motility and respiration of boar spermatozoa, The nondialysable fraction of crude phospholipids was not utilized by the spermatozoa either. These facts show that the effective factor of phospholipids on boar semen metabolism is not lecithin nor cephalin but probably some dialysable substance,
6. Crude soybean-phospholipids did not increase significantly the respiratory activity of boar spermatozoa and was ineffective in promoting the motility.
