Studies on the Effective Substances in Egg Yolk as a Source of Energy for Spermatozoa:I Effect of Fractional Separation of Egg Yolk

Experiments were performed to clarify the effect of egg yolk and its fractions on the respiratory activity and motility of boar spermatozoa suspended in Krebs-Ringer phosphate solution. The results are as follows; 1. The addition of egg yolk to the media increa-sed greatly the rate and duration of oxygen con-sumption and motility. 2. The addition of the aceton-soluble fraction increased greatly the respiration rate but not the motility of boar spermatozoa as compared with the control. 3. The aceton-insoluble fraction had no effect on the motility and respiration of boar spermatozoa. 4. The alcohol-soluble fraction containing lecithin increased slightly O2 consumption of boar spermatozoa. 5. No one of the alcoholinsoluble, ether-soluble: and insoluble, pyridine-soluble and insoluble fractions was effective to promote O2 consumption and motility of boar spermatozoa.
