The metaphosphate (NaPO<SUB>3</SUB>) x used in this study was prepared from NaH<SUB>2</SUB>PO<SUB>3</SUB>·EH<SUB>2</SUB>O by fusing at 650-720°C in my laboratory. The best conditions at the metaphosphate combination tannage were sought by using the 2% gelatine solution. Under thus determined conditions the hide powder which was pretanned with metaphosphate, was retanned with natural tannin solution. Then the changes of degree of P<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> fixation of natural tannin retanned hide powder and absorption of tannin by (NaPO<SUB>3</SUB>)x, pretanned powder were examined.<BR>The results obtained were summerized as fotlows 1 At the metaphosphate-gelatine reaction the effect of pH value on P<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> fixation by gelatine was the greatest and nearly constant at pH 2.3-3.6.<BR>2 The metaphosphate concentration effect on P<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> fixation by gelatine was the highest and nearly constant at the concentration. of 0.01-0.1mol P<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>i.e. 0.2-2%(NaPO<SUB>3</SUB>)x<BR>3 The P<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> fixation increased with gelatine concentration.<BR>4 The higher reaction temperature arose, the lower P<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> fixation decreased.<BR>5 The degree of P<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> fixation of natural tannin retanned hide powder decreased by the retanning.<BR>6 The amount of absorbed tannin by metaphosphate pretanned hide powder decreased and the tanning degree of vegetable retanned powder also decreased by metaphosphate pretanning.
