The metaphosphate (NaPO3) x used in this study was prepared from NaH2PO3·EH2O by fusing at 650-720°C in my laboratory. The best conditions at the metaphosphate combination tannage were sought by using the 2% gelatine solution. Under thus determined conditions the hide powder which was pretanned with metaphosphate, was retanned with natural tannin solution. Then the changes of degree of P2O5 fixation of natural tannin retanned hide powder and absorption of tannin by (NaPO3)x, pretanned powder were examined. The results obtained were summerized as fotlows 1 At the metaphosphate-gelatine reaction the effect of pH value on P2O5 fixation by gelatine was the greatest and nearly constant at pH 2.3-3.6. 2 The metaphosphate concentration effect on P2O5 fixation by gelatine was the highest and nearly constant at the concentration. of 0.01-0.1mol P2O5i.e. 0.2-2%(NaPO3)x 3 The P2O5 fixation increased with gelatine concentration. 4 The higher reaction temperature arose, the lower P2O5 fixation decreased. 5 The degree of P2O5 fixation of natural tannin retanned hide powder decreased by the retanning. 6 The amount of absorbed tannin by metaphosphate pretanned hide powder decreased and the tanning degree of vegetable retanned powder also decreased by metaphosphate pretanning.
