To examine the histological differences in the cattle hide and leather in relationn to the hide condition at living state, the author has practiced this experiment with two female animals, of the Japanesse black breed of cattle. Firstly, the histological differences of the hide sampled from 14 locations on each cattle body were studied. As the result, it was known that the cattle which was considered to have good hide had many unfavorable defects from the standpoint of a leather source. In histological study of leather, that of the cattle with good hide was thinner and more ununiform and had finner leather fibers and less fine grain surfaces than that of the one with non-good hide, and those differences were more distinct on fore quaters than any other location on cattle body. Besides, the former had smaller strech and tensile strength than the latter. The author concludes that the good quality of the hide in cattle judging is not perfectly parallel to the good quality of the raw hide as a leather source.
