Mixing-type Bipolar Charger using Corona-discharge at High Pressure (MBCCHP) developed by Kimoto et al. (Aerosol Sci. Technol. (2009) 43, 872) is studied theoretically and experimentally. In theoretical studies, the charging model for the MBCCHP is developed to make clear effects of the residence time tR, the number ratio of negative ions to positive ions N-/N+, and the number ratio of particles to bipolar ions n0/NB (where NB = N+ + N-) on the charge distribution. The charge distribution measured at various n0/NB and N-/N+ are compared with theoretical results. The comparisons showed that the theoretical results explain well the experimental ones. From both results, the MBCCHP was found to give equilibrium charge distributions within errors of 10% to aerosol particles with diameter of 10-500 nm and the particle number concentration of n0 < 3.0 × 1012 m-3 at operation conditions of 0.5 > tR > 0.1 s, the frequency of >100 Hz and voltage of 9.0 kV0-p, and the pressure of high pressure ionizer of 0.4 MPa.
