The presence of biological micro-particles in the air of the Closed Ecology Experimental Facilities (CEEF) can influence human health inside the modules. Rain and fog occurrence can be also widely affected by the presence of bioaerosols: because aerosols can work as nuclei for the formation of droplets when fog is generated in the module, the bioaerosols may play an important role in controlling fog formation. Moreover the presence of a microflora in the air of closed habitation facilities can bring medical (infections and allergy) as well as technical risks (degradation of structural materials and bio-interference in hardware functioning). With the purpose to evaluate the importance of biological microparticles in the air of CEEF the amount and type of biological aerosols were investigated. Sampling of aerosols was performed using both “Andersen ambient impactor” for water insoluble particles and Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) for total (water soluble and insoluble) particles. The Andersen impactor gives a size separation of particles in 6 fractions: bigger than 7 μm in diameter at the upper stage (level 1); 4.7 to 7 μm; 3.3 to 4.7 μm; 2.1 to 3.3 μm; 1.1 to 2.1 μm and 0.65 to 1.1 μm at level 6. Observation and enumeration of aerosols were done under light microscope and for bacteria enumeration under epifluorescence microscope with previous stained by 4 6-diamidino-2-phenilindole (DAPI). Concentrations of total particles by using CPC and the microscope were (2.0±0.2) × 108 m-3 and 2.5 × 104 m-3, respectively. These results show that the bulk of micro-particles in the module were water-soluble aerosols. Bacteria were found to be almost associated with other bioaerosols as leaf debris and sometimes with mineral particles. The total concentration of bacteria within the sample was 8.4 × 103 m-3 and the 33% of the total water insoluble particles.
