The inspection methods for hot bars will be discussed. Inline inspections of surface flaws in hot rolling are one of the most difficult subjects, because of the heats, the traveling speeds of the hot bars and so on. Multi-channel array probes are advantageous for surface inspection of the bars because of the adaptability to their shapes and inspection speed compare to mechanical scanning probes. This paper shows ideas of probe designs and the improvements of the probes for more sensitive inspections. The produced probes consist of square coils printed on flexible circuit boards. These sizes are from 9 mm to 18 mm. The array probes printed on the boards are advantageous to reduce variations of characteristics of each probe. The results of experiment using the probes for hot flat bar show artificial slits, which depths are from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm, on the bar are detected by 5 mm lift-off.
