In order to investigate the effect of loading rate on the hysteresis response of R/C framed shearwalls with an opening, we conducted the lateral loading tests on ten shearwalls with an opening of 1/4 scale model.The opening rate was 0.28. The experimental variables included in the test series were loading rate, loading path and failure mode. The loading rates were 0.014 %/sec and 1.4 %/sec. The failure modes of shear walls with an opening were the shear,flexural shear and flexure. The reversed cyclic and monotonic lateral load under a constant axial load were applied to the specimens.The lateral load carrying capacity of shear walls with an opening subjected to the lateral load at the high loading rate were larger than that at the low loading rate. Also, the capacity of shear walls subjected to the monotonic lateral load was larger than that subjected to the reversed cyclic lateral load.The observed capacity agreed well with the calculated one by the authors' equation.
